Straßburg

Although Straßburg is the smallest town in Carinthia, it has much of interest to offer from a cultural perspective as the former centre of clerical and spiritual life in Carinthia.

The revitalised Straßburg Castle was a bishop’s seat for centuries, but today it is home to a folklore museum and the setting for atmospheric events. In 1995 the Kulturring Schloss Straßburg was founded to reinvigorate the castle culturally, and amongst other things it organises concerts, exhibitions, children’s programmes, cabaret, etc. Another historical eye catcher is Pöckstein Castle in Zwischenwässern. This was owned by the bishopric of Gurk until 2012, and is now in private ownership. It is set to become an art and culture centre in the near future following extensive renovation and restoration works.

In the immediate vicinity: the station for the Gurk Valley Railway, a narrow-gauge steam railway in Carinthia and the first museum railway in Austria. The railway runs on selected dates from June to September.
